Modern Kazakh alphabet is based on Сyrillic alphabet. There are 42 letters. The letters в, ё, ф, ц, ч, щ, ю, я are only used in the words borrowed from the Russian language. Two letters ь (sign of softness), ъ (sign of separation) don’t have any meanings and are encountered only in borrowed words. They are used to show softness and hardness of consonants in the borrowed Russian words. In the Kazakh language, the consonants are fully under the impact of vowels, and that is why the consonants which are used with hard vowels become hard and the consonants which are used with soft vowels become soft.

Hard and soft vowel rules that govern suffix selection in Kazakh

Дауысты үндестік (Vowel Harmony)

Kazakh vowels split into back/hard (а, о, ұ, ы, у) and front/soft (ә, ө, ү, е, і, и). Suffixes must match the last vowel of the root: a back-vowel root takes back-vowel suffixes, a front-vowel root takes front-vowel ones. This is why most endings come in pairs.

Kazakh nouns take one of seven cases. Endings come in harmonic variants; the table below shows the pattern with «үй» (house):

Сын есім (Adjectives)

Adjectives come before the noun and, unlike nouns, they do not take plural or case endings — they stay unchanged. The comparative degree adds -рақ/-рек/-ырақ/-ірек ('more'), and «ең» before an adjective marks the superlative ('most').

Cardinal numbers: бір (1), екі (2), үш (3), төрт (4), бес (5), алты (6), жеті (7), сегіз (8), тоғыз (9), он (10). Important: a noun that follows a number stays singular — Kazakh does not add the plural suffix after a numeral. Ordinal numbers add -ыншы/-інші/-ншы/-нші.
