Әліпби

Modern Kazakh alphabet is based on Сyrillic alphabet. There are 42 letters. The letters в, ё, ф, ц, ч, щ, ю, я are only used in the words borrowed from the Russian language. Two letters ь (sign of softness), ъ (sign of separation) don’t have any meanings and are encountered only in borrowed words. They are used to show softness and hardness of consonants in the borrowed Russian words. In the Kazakh language, the consonants are fully under the impact of vowels, and that is why the consonants which are used with hard vowels become hard and the consonants which are used with soft vowels become soft.
Example: 113137440
The Kazakh Alphabet: Аа, Әә, Бб, Вв, Гг, Ғғ, Дд, Ее, Ёё, Жж, Зз, Ии, Йй, Кк, Ққ, Лл, Мм, Нн, Ңң, Оо, Өө, Пп, Рр, Сс, Тт, Уу, Ұұ, Үү, Фф, Хх, Һһ, Цц, Чч, Шш, Щщ, Ъъ, Ыы, Іі, Ьь, Ээ, Юю, Яя

Vowel Harmony

Hard and soft vowel rules that govern suffix selection in Kazakh

Дауысты үндестік (Vowel Harmony)

Kazakh vowels split into back/hard (а, о, ұ, ы, у) and front/soft (ә, ө, ү, е, і, и). Suffixes must match the last vowel of the root: a back-vowel root takes back-vowel suffixes, a front-vowel root takes front-vowel ones. This is why most endings come in pairs.
Example: 113137440
қала → қалалар (cities — back) үй → үйлер (houses — front) бала → балаға (to the child — back) көл → көлге (to the lake — front)

Дауыссыз үндестік (Consonant Harmony)

The first consonant of a suffix also adapts to the sound before it: after voiced sounds and vowels use the soft variant (-дар/-дер, -ға/-ге), after voiceless consonants use the hard variant (-тар/-тер, -қа/-ке).
Example: 113137440
ұстаз → ұстаздар (teachers) кітап → кітаптар (books) тас → тасқа (to the stone) жер → жерге (to the ground)

Plurals

Plural endings -лар/-лер, -дар/-дер, -тар/-тер and their usage rules

Көптік жалғау (Plural Suffix)

Plurals are formed with one of six variants of the plural suffix, chosen by vowel harmony and the final sound of the word: -лар/-лер (after vowels and л, р, у, й), -дар/-дер (after voiced consonants), -тар/-тер (after voiceless consonants).
Example: 113137440
бала → балалар (children) үй → үйлер (houses) қыз → қыздар (girls) көл → көлдер (lakes) кітап → кітаптар (books) мектеп → мектептер (schools)

Cases

Seven grammatical cases: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Locative, Ablative, Instrumental

Жеті септік (The Seven Cases)

Kazakh nouns take one of seven cases. Endings come in harmonic variants; the table below shows the pattern with «үй» (house):
Example: 113137440
Мен мектепке барамын. (I go to school. — Dative) Ол қалада тұрады. (He lives in the city. — Locative) Біз ауылдан келдік. (We came from the village. — Ablative) Ананың кітабы. (Mother's book. — Genitive)

Adjectives

Positive and negative adjective forms, opposites

Сын есім (Adjectives)

Adjectives come before the noun and, unlike nouns, they do not take plural or case endings — they stay unchanged. The comparative degree adds -рақ/-рек/-ырақ/-ірек ('more'), and «ең» before an adjective marks the superlative ('most').
Example: 113137440
үлкен үй (a big house) әдемі гүл (a beautiful flower) үлкен үйлерде (in the big houses — only the noun inflects) биік → биіктірек (taller) ең биік тау (the highest mountain)

Numerals

Cardinal and ordinal numbers in Kazakh

Сан есім (Numerals)

Cardinal numbers: бір (1), екі (2), үш (3), төрт (4), бес (5), алты (6), жеті (7), сегіз (8), тоғыз (9), он (10). Important: a noun that follows a number stays singular — Kazakh does not add the plural suffix after a numeral. Ordinal numbers add -ыншы/-інші/-ншы/-нші.
Example: 113137440
екі кітап (two books — not кітаптар) бес алма (five apples) бірінші (first), екінші (second), үшінші (third) Ол жиырма жаста. (He is twenty years old.)

Possessives

Possessive endings for all persons

Тәуелдік жалғау (Possessive Suffixes)

Possession is shown by a suffix on the owned noun (not a separate word), agreeing with the owner:
1st sg 'my': -м / -ым / -ім
2nd sg 'your': -ң / -ың / -ің (formal -ңыз/-ңіз)
3rd 'his/her/their': -сы/-сі / -ы/-і
1st pl 'our': -мыз / -міз / -ымыз / -іміз
Example: 113137440
кітабым (my book) кітабың (your book) кітабы (his/her book) кітабымыз (our book) анам (my mother), әкең (your father)
