Bridging Cultures Through Language

A pioneering initiative connecting Kazakhstan and Oxford to bring the Kazakh language to the world.

The Birsoz Initiative

The platform emerged from the Kazakhstan–UK collaboration including the Birsöz initiative at Oxford University. Developers are employees of the A. Baytursynuly Institute of Linguistics.

The database includes texts for A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 levels, lexical and grammatical references, picture dictionary, video materials, exercises and tasks. It operates on the National Corpus of Kazakh Language platform and is fully interactive.

It provides comprehensive information about Kazakh phonetics, vocabulary, grammar while offering in-depth introduction to Kazakh culture. Intended for all English-speaking non-native speakers interested in the Kazakh language.

A comprehensive guide to Kazakh grammar — from the 42-letter Cyrillic alphabet to complex verb forms and case endings.

The modern Kazakh alphabet uses Cyrillic script with 42 letters. Letters в, ё, ф, ц, ч, щ, ю, я appear only in borrowed Russian words. There are 9 vowels and specific Kazakh letters: Ә, Ғ, Қ, Ң, Ө, Ұ, Ү, Һ, I.

Буын үндестігі — Hard vowels require hard suffixes; soft vowels require soft suffixes. This is the fundamental rule of Kazakh morphology.

Көптік жалғауы — Plural endings follow vowel harmony and consonant assimilation rules. Note: plurals are NOT used with numerals or quantifiers.
